The 2024/25 football season is coming to its conclusion, and across Europe’s top five leagues, each respective title race could well be coming to a predictable conclusion. Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain have already been crowned champions of France, while the bookies fancy their chances of claiming a maiden continental crown as well. But with that title race being wrapped up with an unsurprising outcome, could the rest of the continent be set to follow?
Across Europe’s four biggest leagues, the bookies have a very clear favorite in each division. So, is there any possibility of an upset? Or will the current runaway table toppers emerge predictably victorious?
Premier League
In the Premier League, Liverpool have swept all before them this term. With just a few games remaining, they are a whopping 11 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, and sports betting sites can’t envision them slipping up from here. The latest sports betting online odds currently make the Reds an incredibly short 1/100 favorite to win the league, with the Gunners lagging behind at 25/1.
However, there could be more to this than what meets the eye. While Arne Slot’s side has certainly been on a tear this season, the wheels have come off the bus in recent weeks. Liverpool was dumped out of the Champions League on home turf by Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 before losing the League Cup final to Newcastle United a few days later. Their poor cup form has now made its way into domestic matters, with the Reds recently losing 3-2 away at Fulham to pick up just their second league loss of the season.
Slot’s side have some difficult games to go between now and the end of the campaign, including a trip to Chelsea, a home clash against Arsenal, as well as a trip to the South Coast to face high-flying Brighton. As the odds suggest, it would be an almighty collapse if they don’t win the title from here, but a couple more defeats and they will certainly begin to panic.
Bundesliga
Last season, Bayer Leverkusen shocked the world when they ripped the Meisterschale away from Bayern Munich for the first time in 12 years. The title was the first in Die Werkself’s entire history, and not only that, but they managed to become the first team ever to win the Bundesliga without losing a single game. This term, however, their rivals from Bavaria are back with a vengeance.
Vincent Kompany’s side have amassed a six-point lead at the top of the table, and with just six games remaining, nobody seems to be predicting that they will slip up. They are a 1/50 betting favorite to secure the title, but with games upcoming against Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Mainz, perhaps this also isn’t a foregone conclusion just yet. Add to that the fact that the Bavarians also have to balance their domestic matters with their quest to win the UEFA Champions League, and Xabi Alonso’s reigning champions might not have given up hope.
La Liga
The La Liga title race had been looking to be perhaps the closest on the continent all season long. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid were all separated by just one point a few weeks ago. However, recent losses for the capital city giants have seen their rivals from Catalonia pull away. Barca currently sits four points clear of Real, with Atleti three further points adrift, prompting the bookies to install the table toppers as a 1/5 betting favorite.
There is still plenty of football to be played this season though. Barcelona will finish the campaign with back-to-back games against top-four candidates in the form of Villareal and Athletic Bilbao, while there’s still one final El Clasico to be played against Real Madrid, perhaps the greatest rivalry in all of football. Atleti look out of the reckoning, but Los Blancos will still feel that they are in the hunt.
Serie A
The title race over in Italy was also looking like a close affair. At one point, the entire top six was separated by just a few points, before Napoli, Inter Milan, and Atalanta began to pull away. In recent weeks, the latter of that trio has fallen away, but Antonio Conte’s Napoli remains in contention, sitting four points behind the table-topping Nerazzurri.
The bookies can only see one destination for the Scudetto, and that’s heading back to the San Siro with reigning champions Inter. Simone Inzagho’s side has been made the 1/4 favorites to retain the gold, with Napoli a 5/2 outsider. But they too will feel like they remain contenders, and recent victories against the likes of AC Milan will have certainly bolstered their hopes.
